I never know where I am going when I begin a painting. I am playing with color and texture, line and shape. My aim as I move through the artwork is to make the surface of the painting active, a surface with which the viewer can interact.
I work to elicit an emotional response from the viewer and hopefully to express some aspect of the way I see the world. Whether the piece is quiet, tense or action itself, I am using space and my history of stored imagery and life experience to find new possibilities and new territories for locating reality. I see an abstract painting as a poem from another realm.
